Could Ryan Tannehill be Sam Darnold’s next backup, reunite with Adam Gase?

With Josh McCown’s future up in the air, the Jets could find themselves looking for a new backup quarterback. Could it be someone that Adam Gase already knows?

With the hiring of Brian Flores, the Dolphins will look to revamp their roster. That will likely include cutting Ryan Tannehill, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano.

Gase, sometimes without valid reason, repeatedly stood by Tannehill during their time together in Miami. Might that mean a reunion in New York is in order?

If so, Tannehill would have to transition to the role of a backup with the Jets. There’s already this kid Sam Darnold in town, and, well, he’s the undeniable face of the franchise.

That doesn’t mean Tannehill is not a fit, though. McCown — a terrific mentor to Darnold — has yet to decide if he’s retiring, and the Jets can’t wait forever. Gase, meanwhile, has been a vocal proponent of Tannehill’s abilities. With a spot open on the depth chart, it’s not a stretch to imagine Tannehill switching AFC East allegiances once he’s released.

Tannehill had some of his best seasons under the tutelage of Gase. If it weren’t for a torn ACL in 2017, the two may have been able to accomplish more in Miami. Only 30 years old, there is a case to be made that Tannehill has more to offer to another franchise, though it’s hard to see him landing an outright starting job.

Could he swallow his pride and become an asset for the Jets as a backup to a 21-year-old? For his old head coach, that answer may just be yes.
