The Washington Redskins might have to end up settling for less-than-ideal compensation in exchange for Trent Williams.
Such writing has been on the wall for a long time now, arguably dating back to when Williams made it clear last season he wasn’t returning to the team.
In the wake of Williams going up on the trade block recently after a Ron Rivera sales pitch didn’t work, it has become clear no deal is imminent.
And according to Julie Donaldson of NBC Sports Washington, the Redskins might not even get a second-round pick out of the ordeal.
As expected, really. Williams, good as he has been in the past, just spent a year out of football and hasn’t played a full 16 games since 2013. He’s also turning 32 in July.
Keep in mind Williams is also free to enter contract negotiations with the team trading for him — which might be the real hangup for a team like the Cleveland Browns. And we’re talking in the $20 million per year range.
The current standoff is all a little odd, so if looking for a trade at all, expect it around the draft. But as far as expectations for compensation goes, don’t expect much.
