Could Matt LaCosse lead TE position for Patriots?

The tight end position was already considered a weak link among an otherwise well rounded New England Patriots roster entering this offseason after Rob Gronkowski’s retirement. With the release of Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Ben Watson’s four-game suspension, the situation is only murkier for the team.

Enter Matt LaCosse. Signing with the Patriots early on this offseason, LaCosse would be the projected starter if the season began today. Entering his fifth season in the league, the current situation at tight end could provide the perfect opportunity for a breakout year.

The team clearly saw something in him when they signed him to a two-year deal at the start of free agency. Despite a lack of production LaCosse certainly has the confidence to step up and help the depleted tight end position.

“I played all over the field in past offenses,” he told reporters after minicamp practice at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday. “If they need me to be outside, I’ll be outside. If they need me to block, I’ll block. If they need me on special teams, my butt’s going on special teams. Whatever they need me to do, I’ll do it, and I’ll do it well.”

Considering the current cap situation there likely won’t be any outside help at the tight end position despite the rumors surrounding Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph. LaCosse has the size and athleticism to take the reins and help the offense out of the gates in September.
