Could Kyle Rudolph actually benefit from Irv Smith Jr.?

It was quite the offseason for Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph.

There were trade rumors, the team drafted a tight end in the second round, and then . . . the Vikings signed Rudolph to a big-old extension.

So far in camp, Rudolph has looked good. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has already praised his tight end, and on Thursday, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer did the same.

“He’s running better, yes,” Zimmer said. “He did a nice job in the offseason, but he is running better, yes.”

It makes sense that everyone is looking a bit more fresh in training camp considering they’ve gotten some time off.

But with Rudolph, it’s worth asking the question if having a guy like Irv Smith Jr., another tight end who can catch the ball, could help Rudolph keep his body fresh throughout training camp and the regular season.

The Vikings drafting Smith Jr. could be a blessing in disguise for Rudolph.
