Could Ken Whisenhunt’s firing impact QB Philip Rivers’ future with Chargers?

When Ken Whisenhunt joined the Chargers in 2013, he practically helped quarterback Philip Rivers turn things around. That season, they finished with a top-5 offense.

The team then proceeded to finish among the best statistically while he was the OC.

In his two stints with the Bolts, not only did Whisenhunt’s offensive philosophy mesh with Rivers, but the two became very close throughout the years.

This leads to us wondering if the firing of Whisenhunt could impact Rivers’ future.

Rivers will be an unrestricted free agent after this season, and it’s not guaranteed that he will be back in a Chargers uniform in 2020 and beyond.

We’ve mentioned before that there is some reason to believe that Rivers won’t be with the team that he’s played for his entire professional career.

Rivers’ regression has been evident with his arm strength, decision-making and ball security issues this season.

Now, there’s a good possibility that the team might be thinking about implementing an offensive scheme which revolves around what coach Anthony Lynn wanted when he took over, which is running an offense which includes a mobile quarterback.

The bottomline is that no one knows the future of Rivers until he says so. We already thought this could be his last year as a Charger, but losing Whisenhunt, who he had a great connection with, could make his decision a little bit easier.
