Could ex-Giant Pat Shurmur take over as Michigan State head coach?

Former New York Giants head coach and current Denver Broncos offensive coordinator, Pat Shumur, is suddenly a hot commodity.

Giant fans couldn’t get Shumur out of East Rutherford fast enough after back-to-back 5-11 seasons, but the rest of the football world has a different opinion.

Shurmur’s name is being bandied about for the head coaching spot at his alma mater, Michigan State, whose head coach, Mark Dantonio, resigned earlier this week.

Per Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, Shurmur is under consideration.

This is a live name that’s been vetted internally and discussed as a real candidate. Shurmur is a Michigan State graduate and brings four years of NFL head-coaching experience. The results haven’t been there, but he’d be a safe transition away from Dantonio and be able to sell recruits on a coach who can get them to the NFL.

One of the other nine candidates Thamel listed is San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, the only other candidate listed currently coaching in the NFL.

Shurmur was a center at MSU in the early-mid-1980s and then stayed on as an assistant coach from 1988-97, first under George Perles and then under Nick Saban.

Dantonio has been the Spartans’ head coach since 2007 and has compiled a record of 115-57, the winningest coach in school history.

Shurmur is likely done being head coaching timber in the NFL after logging in a 19-46 record with three teams.
