Could Evgeny Lebedev want more than a Standard editor?

Geordie Greig may be swanning off to the Mail on Sunday, but who is going to replace him at the Evening Standard? Sarah Sands, the experienced deputy has only be rewarded with an acting editor title, although those in the know say Geordie's departure happened so quickly that Evgeny Lebedev hasn't had time to think the subject through. But if not Sands, who? Stefano Hatfield, editor of i, and previously of the London Paper, has proven himself with lighter products – and must fancy himself with a chance. Some highlight the prospects of the astute Anne McElvoy – for a long time a Standard columnist – who now writes about media matters for the Economist. McElvoy knows Russian, if that is relevant, and has put herself forward for other senior jobs. But it took an awfully long time for the Lebedevs to get round to appointing a new editor of the Independent, despite plenty of rumours that Simon Kelner was on his way out, and every owner likes to think they can appoint a star. Could that mean Rod Liddle has a chance? You never know.
