The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting every form of life, business, sports, and entertainment.
Now comes a note from USA Today columnist Dan Wolken that is certain to raise eyebrows.
That presents fascinating issues: What would a star player — Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, for example — do in the case college football is moved to the spring? Do you play, risking injury, when the NFL Draft is imminent? Or do you simply sit out and wait to be drafted?
The push to the spring could also impact other sports. Would it delay the college basketball season until after Jan. 1 or later? That option would be practical given the abyss college hoops live in through November and December.
And television networks would scramble to recast their schedules.
The NFL, meanwhile, has little to gain in pushing its draft back and that is apparent by the reaction mentioned in Wolken’s tweet.
The Ivy League will announce its plans for college football July 8. While the football in the conference makes little impression on the big college football picture, a decision to postpone the season could be the first domino for major conferences to follow.
