Could Bristol be getting its own marathon?

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees fielded questions from Bristolians on a whole range of issues during a Facebook Live earlier this month.

The mayor spent nearly an hour covering the big ticket issues such as homelessness, climate change, housing and transport.

But he was also asked whether his office would be willing to help a race organisation put on a yearly marathon in the city.

The search is on to find Bristol's next 70 foster carers - could you be one of them?

Mr Rees, who is an avid runner himself, said he would "absolutely" support a marathon in Bristol - but warned these kind of events come with a hefty price tag.

In the video Mr Rees explained his administration had taken a three-pronged approach to sport in the city.

Firstly increase participation, second, making sure talent gets the opportunity to develop into world-class talent and third, bringing world class sports activities to the city.

He added: "I would support that but it must come with the financial support.

"We have had a few offers recently of world class events, but they come with a very heavy price tag.

"Of course we would love to bring them here but we face a number of challenges currently such as funding adult social care, children's services and making sure we are filling our potholes in."

Half Marathon start

Mr Rees also welcomed anyone who was serious about putting on a marathon in Bristol to come and have a chat with him as he "would be all ears".

He also told listeners that it was a timely question as he accidentally signed up for two running events on the Bank Holiday weekend not realising they were on the same weekend.

Mr Rees took part in a Tough Mudder on the Saturday and then ran in the Bristol 10K the following day.

Thousands of people take part in the Simplyhealth Great Bristol Half Marathon already.

This year's 13.1 mile race takes place on September 15.
