'Cosy retreat' Merseyside café loved by Johnny Vegas

Johnny Vegas has shared his love for a "cosy" Merseyside café as it featured in scenes that aired on ITV earlier this week.

The St Helens born comedian along with Alex Brooker starred in the latest instalment of DNA journey, as they were joined by experts to find out more about their family histories. Part of the episode saw Johnny return to his hometown, which he said is his "happy place".

Viewers watched as Johnny took Alex to the Citadel theatre, which played a massive part in the launch of his career.

Later, the comedians visited the Toast Coffee House & Cafe, located on Dentons Green Lane. Alex said: "This is nice", to which Johnny replied: "It is, it's cosy, a cosy little retreat".

The café has created a "little piece of Paris" and has been loved by loyal customers for 12 years. Toast boasts a quirky and cosy décor and serves delicious afternoon teas and "seriously tasty" breakfasts.

The popular business was opened in 2011 by mum-of-two Lisa Whittle, originally from Rainford, who saw the building as a "massive retail opportunity." When customers arrive and walk down a cobbled courtyard to get inside, they are immediately transported from St Helens to abroad and can enjoy an array of cakes, sandwiches, ice creams and more.

DNA Journey airs Tuesdays at 9pm on ITV and ITVX
