'Cosy' French bistro to open at Stockport's historic Winter’s building

A ‘taste of France’ is coming to Stockport later this year thanks to chef Marc Molé.

Chef Marc Molé will open Bistro Marc at the Underbank’s historic Winter’s building later this year alongside wife and business manager Rachel Winter Jones.

The bistro will serve up French comfort food, including French onion soup, boeuf bourguignon, crème brulée and croque-monsieur, across à la carte and fixed price menus.

The ‘cosy’ bistro will use fresh produce from Stockport Indoor Markets as well as other local suppliers.

Born and raised in Paris, chef Marc is ‘passionate’ about sharing his love for good quality food and the Parisian bistro experience.

He has previously trained in Washington D.C. with the former French head chef to the French Ambassador.

"We are so excited and honoured to have been given the opportunity to open our French bistro in the iconic Winter’s Grade II listed building,” Marc and Rachel said.

“We will offer a taste of quality French cuisine, with local produce, at a reasonable price.

“We are also very proud to be part of Stockport’s regeneration programme on the Underbanks, and can’t wait to welcome the people of the Greater Stockport area to Bistro Marc at Winter’s.

“We want to hear the Winter’s clock chime again!”

Restoration work to the historic Winter's building was first announced in February, with speculation that it would be used as a restaurant.

The work done will include sensitive repairs to the unique, automated ornate clock and figurines depicting Old Father Time and a soldier and sailor.

Over the years, the building has served as an opticians, jewellers, a restaurant, and most recently as a pub.

The restoration is part of Stockport Council’ s wider programme of work to restore and improve buildings in the Underbanks, with significant funding and support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Cllr David Meller, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “Since announcing in April that work was underway at this iconic building, speculation has been rife as to the new tenants and it’s great news that we can finally introduce you to Marc and Rachel.

“I’m confident their passion and energy to deliver an authentic French bistro, while still preserving the heritage and history of the building will be a huge asset to the town centre.

“I wish them well in their new venture, Bistro Marc at Winter’s will be a fantastic addition to a growing number of restaurants in Stockport.

“We’re committed to ensuring this historic area of the town centre is given the attention it deserves and with so many new openings, despite challenging times, more and more businesses are seeing the area as a great place to set up business.

“There’s definitely a buzz in the air.”

Bistro Marc at Winter’s is set to welcome guests in Autumn 2021.
