Cosy Bristol pub The Rose of Denmark to close a year after reopening under new management

A Bristol pub which reopened under new management last summer after closing will soon shut its doors once again.

The Rose of Denmark in Hotwells closed suddenly in June last year due to rising rents and increasing keg costs, which came as a shock to nearby residents who loved its cosy atmosphere and first-rate roast dinners.

Boasting a roaring fire perfect for wintry nights, the pub enjoyed a fair share of acclaim in its heyday including scooping ‘Highly Commended’ at the Bristol Good Food Awards on several occasions, meaning there was widespread disappointment when it closed.

However the sadness was short-lived as the quaint boozer, owned by UK-wide pub group Star Pubs & Bars, reopened under new owners just two months later, much to the delight of locals who were excited about the return of the roast dinners.

After taking over in August 2018, new landlord Mike Coe also put on regular drag nights at the pub which all went down well, as well as the occasional pop-up event and comedy night.

But sadly the Dowry Place pub will once again be closing later this month, almost exactly a year since Mike took over the reins, as it is 'not feasible' for him to continue.

He said: "The pub was taken on as a temporary basis and it feels right to move on.

"Sadly to take over the pub over permanently would be a costly venture and the three-year lease we were offered wasn't feasible for us.

"We have loved bringing back roasts and introducing drag to Hotwells over the last few months and wish the new landlords all the best."

Closing party

The pub will close after last orders on Saturday, July 27 - but not before a fun-filled farewell blowout.

It will play host to a closing day street party with live music, drag acts and barbecued food on the final Saturday.

The event starts at 3pm and finishes once the bar has been drunk dry, and will raise money for Dexter's Odyssey, a charity which helps families who are dealing with a child cancer diagnosis, and anorexia charities.
