'Costing us!' - Chelsea fans unhappy after crucial moment haunts them vs West Ham

Chelsea were the makers of their own problems at West Ham United on Saturday, as a mistake brought about a crucial penalty for the home side.

The visitors did take the lead at the London Stadium, Thiago Silva heading past Lukasz Fabianski from a corner, however it was short-lived. Midfielder Jorginho was careless in possession, playing a pass without looking back to Edouard Mendy in the Blues' penalty area.

The goalkeeper then had to deal with the oncoming presence of Jarrod Bowen, who took the ball off of the shot-stopper in the box with all of the Blues’ defenders pushing further up the pitch.

The Senegal international then made a clumsy challenge to try and stop the winger from having a chance at goal, taking him down in the process.

The referee pointed to the spot with no hesitation and a VAR check confirmed it was a penalty, with Hammers’ playmaker Manuel Lanzini stepping up to take it.

He dispatched the penalty to draw his side level, but shortly after parity was restored, Chelsea took the lead again. Mason Mount scored a fantastic first-time volley with the side of his foot to give the Blues the lead again going into the break. That was cancelled out by Jarrod Bowen's excellent second-half strike.

Chelsea fans were quick to take to Twitter to discuss the mistake leading to the penalty.

@Alicfc2005: “Jorginho isn’t helping himself lately.”

@N1cbenedict: “First jorginho, 2nd Mendy, C'mon lads this isn't a kids game.”

@Sowunmitsob2830: “Tuchel has been failing to read the game properly. Chelsea defense has been doing this with Mendy for the past 4 games.”

@cfc_nk: “How did jorgi get 3rd in ballon dor?”

@Markalibone: “Jorginho needs his head sorting out 2 mistakes now costing us !!”

@cfcjames102: “Why didn't Mendy play a corner? He put himself on under pressure for nothing.”
