Costco rations packs of toilet rolls amid coronavirus outbreak

Costco is rationing the number of toilet rolls customers can buy amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Videos showing people fighting over packs of toilet rolls in stores have been widely shared on social media.

It seems shoppers are stocking up on supplies, fearing supermarkets will be hit by a shortage as the virus takes hold.

Mum Lyndsey Schofield said she thought it was nothing but media hype until she saw the scramble for herself at Costco in Oldham on Tuesday morning.

The retailer is limiting customers to one pack of toilet rolls, one packet of kitchen rolls and one pack of boxed tissues.

"I am in shock, it’s real, I thought it was all hype," said Lyndsey.

"Have just been to Costco and they are literally queuing for toilet paper. People were only allowed one pack each, they were bringing pallets out and they were empty in five minutes."

Lyndsey, from Ashton, said she got one pack of 40 rolls for £10.99, but her mum Val wasn't able to buy any.

"I got one pack because I genuinely needed some, but mum could not get any because she isn’t a member and it’s one pack per member," said Lyndsey.

Mum to Oliver, nine, and seven-year-old Josh, she can't understand why people are 'panic buying'.

"I can understand hand wash and sanitizers, but I can’t get my head around toilet roll," she said.

"They see others doing it then panic in case they can’t get any when they need it. It’s the one thing I could live without if needed to.

"Food on the other hand seems pretty important but no empty shelves there.

"My mum lives in Blackpool and can’t drive so when she goes back she has to get toilet paper from the local supermarket. If they are sold out she can’t go shopping around so I'm sending her home stocked up."

Oldham Costco confirmed that customers have been limited to one pack each.
