Costa, White, Roofe? Select your XI for Leeds United's first pre-season friendly at York City

Wednesday will see Leeds United take to the pitch for their first game since losing to Derby County in the play-off semi-final in May.

The pre-season friendly against York City will offer fans their first opportunity to cast their eyes over new players and offer a reunion with some familiar faces - plus the chance to see who is not there.

As we saw in the summer of 2018, Marcelo Bielsa's men will play two teams in quick succession. Last season two different Leeds United teams took on Forest Green Rovers, followed by York City two days later. If Bielsa follows the same patterns as last summer, it will be at York City where we see the stronger team.

The starting XI at Forest Green Rovers on 17 July included nine of the players that would go on to make the first team against Stoke City on the opening day of the season. Only Adam Forshaw, who was ruled out with injury, and Stuart Dallas, who was replaced by Barry Douglas, failed to make the line up at Elland Road on August 5.

So, on the assumption that we see what Bielsa considers to be his first team at Bootham Crescent on Wednesday night and a second string team at Guiseley the following evening, who would you expect to see in the line up?

There are several things to take into consideration...

Goalkeeping dilemma

So far there have been no ins or outs between the sticks this summer so it looks likely that either Kiko Casilla or Bailey Peacock-Farrell will be wearing the goalkeeper's jersey on Wednesday night - and against Bristol City on the first day of the season. Peacock-Farrell made 29 appearances for Leeds United last season and Casilla made 19 after joining from Real Madrid in January. Both keepers came in for criticism from the fans last season, so the dilemma here is whether to stick with Casilla or give Peacock-Farrell another chance.

Who will partner Cooper?

ontus Jansson's exit was confirmed on Monday, so Liam Cooper will need a new partner in central defence?

Ben White was brought in from Brighton last week and other options include Gaetano Berardi or moving a player out of position like Luke Ayling or Kalvin Phillips. Or perhaps the answer lies in the Under-23s in the form of Pascal Struijk or Leif Davis.

Where will Costa fit in?

There's no doubt that the marquee signing of the summer has been Helder Costa from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Costa can play on either wing or as a centre forward but was best known as Wolves for playing on the right wing.

Who will play up front?

Kemar Roofe was a surprise star of the 2018/19 season with 15 goals from 34 appearances across all competitions. The high-profile signing of last summer, Patrick Bamford, had a disappointing season disrupted by injury, scoring 10 goals from 25 appearances. Both will be in contention against York, with Ryan Edmondson who did a great job for the Under-23s last season or Tyler Roberts who only managed three goals in total last season, the other options.
