The Vegan Smoky Ham and CheeZe Toastie will go on sale at the popular chain on January 2, as one of 25 vegan products on the menu.
And it seems its combination of Quorn smoky ham and coconut "cheeZe" - inside vegan bread- already has been a winner with a group of toastie-lovers who plumbed its depths during a taste test.
Builders and engineers from London firm Pimlico Plumbers - who apparently are " toastie connoisseurs" says Costa - were enlisted in the trial and failed to notice that the sarnie was meat-free, thinking they were eating Costa's real ham and cheese toastie and giving it their stamp of approval.
Now Costa's customers will be able to try it for themselves when the new product, costing from £2.95, becomes available at its stores in and around Newcastle , and nationwide, this Thursday.
Eric Tavoukdjian, the company's commercial marketing director, said: "We’re really pleased to be able to offer a vegan alternative of one of our iconic best-selling toasties."
The toastie will form part of the chain's biggest ever vegan menu whose seasonal additions include a mince tart and a Festive Veggies under Vests Sandwich.
