Costa is closing its Mumbles coffee shop

Costa Coffee is closing in Mumbles.

The business on Mumbles Road opened on the site of the former Nag’s Head pub, also previously known at the Oystercatcher, 10 years ago.

It quickly established itself in the village as a popular coffee shop, joining a number of branches of the coffee chain across Swansea.

But the company has now revealed it is to leave its premises, despite its popularity.

A spokesman for the company said: “As the nation’s favourite coffee shop brand, we continuously review our Costa Coffee stores and locations to ensure we’re meeting the needs of the local community.

“We can confirm that as of Wednesday, May 27, the store in Mumbles will close, with all team members being offered alternative employment at Costa Coffee stores within the Swansea area.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause our customers.”

One customer wrote: "It's always a shame when something closes generally. But, one positive, regarding the balance between large chains, and local vendors , is it’s great to see Mumbles Coffee in the arcade going from strength to strength".

Despite the departure of Costa, Mumbles continues to attract some big name traders, with Marks & Spencer opening with a successful launch earlier this year .

Paul Whittaker, chairman for Mumbles Tourism and Traders’ Association, said: “It’s a shame that Costa are going as any business leaving Mumbles is a negative, but we have more than our fair share of excellent independent coffee shops to supply a daily hit of caffeine.

“Hopefully another business will replace them quickly”.
