Costa del Sol resort where pastor and two children drowned says mother's claims of pool fault 'at odds with the police report'

The operator of a Costa del Sol resort where a London pastor and his children drowned has rebuked claims of a pool fault.

It comes after the wife of Gabriel Diya, who died on Christmas eve alongside his son Praise-Emmanuel and daughter Comfort, said she believed an issue led to their deaths.

She insisted the trio could swim, after earlier suggestions otherwise, and said she thought a problem with the pool contributed to the incident.

However, the hotel operator Club La Costa World in Fuengirola, Spain, said in a fresh statement that her suggestions of something being wrong with the pool were "directly at odds with the findings of the police report” into the tragedy.

A statement from CLC World Resorts said: “Naturally we have heard the comments made on behalf of Mrs Diya in a widely publicised statement to the media.

"The claims made in that statement are directly at odds with the findings of the police report. This makes it clear that their exhaustive investigations have confirmed the pool was working normally and there was no malfunction of any kind."

Olubunmi Diya previously said she believed “something was wrong with the pool that must have made swimming difficult for them at that point in time”.

Mrs Diya also said her husband and children, who were reportedly on holiday with another daughter who was not injured, were able to swim, contrary to earlier media reports.

Mrs Diya added in her statement: “Our family are utterly heartbroken by the events last Tuesday, but we are comforted and strengthened by our strong faith in our Lord Jesus Christ."

Mr Diya, 52, was described as a "humble, friendly and a committed pastor and Christian leader" by pastor Agu Irukwu, who addressed Mr Diya's congregation in Charlton, south-east London.

Friend and fellow pastor Lemmy Gbenga Ayodele added: “Good night my very good friend, Pst Diya. When you said ‘bye and seeing you later’ a few days ago I didn’t know you meant eternity.

"Difficult to comprehend and still like a dream that you went with two of your children.”
