Costa del Sol, Ibiza, Majorca make face masks mandatory from this week

Costa del Sol has become the latest Spanish region to enforce the use of face masks this week, following similar announcements from Ibiza, Majorca and Catalonia.

Masks will be compulsory in the region from Wednesday, July 15 regardless of social distancing, president of the Andalusian Government Juanma Moreno confirmed.

He added: "Despite the heat, difficulties and limitations, we have to get used to wearing the mask permanently. With the use of the mask, the risk of contagion is reduced to one per cent.”

Costa del Sol is home to the perennial party favourite destination of Marbella, and Brits flocked there last week as the government lifted its travel advice for Spain.

Catalonia and the Balearic Islands - including Ibiza and Majorca - have introduced a similar regulation this week and says those who do not wear a face mask in public will be fined £90 from July 20.

However, there are some face mask exceptions for Ibiza and Majorca. Those on beaches, by pools, eating and drinking in a restaurant and those in the countryside will not have to wear a mask. Tourists visiting Barcelona will have to wear masks on the beach and by the pool - and can only take them off for swimming.

Spain is one of the ‘travel corridors’ announced by the UK government earlier this month . It means Brits can travel to and from Spain quarantine-free.
