Costa del Seafield? Edinburgh council considering turning it into huge new beachfront development

Portobello Community Council are asking locals to have their say on potential plans to turn Seafield into a 'housing led mixed use development.'

No concrete plans to change the area have yet come forward, but if redevelopment does go ahead Edinburgh residents could see the currently relatively industrial seafront area turned into a hub for housing, and possibly other attractions as well.

The area is currently notorious for having a foul odour due to the presence of a large sewage treatment plant - run by Veolia Water, who are contracted to run the site by Scottish Water. Leith residents have repeatedly complained and petitioned the council and water company about the so-called 'Seafield Stench.'

When it comes to waterfront redevelopment, they're way ahead of the game in Kent, where the Folkestone Harbour Company (FHC) is developing a similar sized area that will contain up to 1,000 homes, shops, cafés and bars in the coming decades.

Outline planning consent for the scheme was granted in 2015 and a detailed planning application is expected to be submitted by the Folkestone Harbour Company in the coming months.

Portobello Community Council have published a survey aimed at gathering locals' views about changes to the area, saying:

"The City of Edinburgh Council have proposed that a large area of Seafield should be considered for allocation as “housing led mixed use development” in the next Local Development Plan. Whilst no plans have yet come forward, changes to the site could have a major impact on North East Edinburgh over the next 10 years.

P"ortobello Community Council are seeking your views on whether community councils and other groups in the area should be seeking to proactively shape planning development at Seafield.

"Please have your say using the survey below."
