Costa Coffee reopening at Braehead sees traffic queued back to main road

The reopening of a Costa Coffee drive-thru at Braehead yesterday (Saturday) saw a queue of traffic overflow onto the main road as fans of the chain cafe attempted to get their caffeine fix.

Video footage shared on the Glasgow Live Facebook page shows cars backed up on Braille Crescent, overspilling onto Glasgow Road, near to INTU Braehead shopping centre and the M8 motorway, while the Daily Record reports people queuing 'for hours' to get a coffee.

Some have hit out at the scene, reminding people they should only be taking trips for essential travel.

Yesterday morning, we reported on the reopening of the Costa Coffee venue, after a successful trial at similar drive-thru cafes in England.

Costa said: "Since opening two Drive-Thru and two delivery stores last Friday we’ve had a fantastic response from our team members and customers.

"As such, and with the support of the Government, we will be increasing the number of Drive-Thru lanes and stores open for delivery via Uber Eats from tomorrow."

Costa have also confirmed that while it will be open to all customers, they are "intended to offer critical and key workers the chance to enjoy a Costa on essential journeys".

A Glasgow Live reader responded to our story to say: "Hope folks remember it’s still all but ESSENTIAL travel, great for keys workers but I think Costa should show more responsibility and remind people of this, don’t forget people still dying on a daily basis."

Meanwhile another added: "So if you work in the QEUH and want a coffee do you get to queue skip with your NHS badge? Because what key worker has time to wait in that kind of queue right now?'

When contacted for comment, a Costa Coffee spokesperson told Glasgow Live: "Our number one priority is the safety of our store teams and customers. In line with the re-opening of a small number of drive-thru lanes and delivery stores this weekend, we’ve ensured strict measures have been put in place aligned to Government guidelines.

"We’d like to reinforce that our-drive thru lanes are open to offer key workers the chance to enjoy a Costa on essential journeys, whilst our delivery stores allow customers the opportunity to order a Costa from the comfort of their own home."
