Costa Coffee isn't the only place you can get free drinks - here's how to get yours

On Tuesday Costa Coffee made its express machines free , and it's fair to say people got a bit excited.

Across the country people queued at their nearest Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's local, petrol station or almost anywhere else Costa Coffee had a to-go machine.

Such was the demand for everything from Americanos to Lattes or even hot chocolates that machines ran out of beans and milk across the land as shop staff rushed to refill them.

But if you missed out on Tuesday - or were denied by failing machines or blocked by long queues - the good news is that there are other places you can go to get a coffee without the cost.

Not everyone who wanted one managed to get a free coffee on Tuesday (@robin_hutley/Twitter)

Salman Haqqi from money.co.uk said: "Rather than seeing red at one of the participating outlets with a Costa Coffee Express machine, there are other ways of enjoying a free coffee, tea or other hot drink."

Here are six options:

  • Greggs - downloading the Greggs Rewards app and register. The freebie appears automatically in the 'Rewards' section and is valid for a month. After that, you get a free coffee for every seven you buy

  • Waitrose - if you sign up for a myWaitrose loyalty card , and bring a re-useable cup, you can get a free hot drink with every purchase you make in store.

  • Ikea - people with an Ikea Family loyalty card can get a free tea or coffee anytime Monday-Friday.

  • Caffe Nero   - anyone can get a free hot drink if they download the Cafe Nero app and enter the code "WELCOMETONERO2019". People with the O2 priority app can get a free hot or cold drink at Caffe Nero from midday on Tuesday or Wednesdays.

  • Booths  - people who have a Booths card can get a free regular-sized hot drinks in store every day if they bring a reusable cup and show their card.

  • Blood donors - if you're really committed to the free hot drink, or want to help out people in need, you are generally given one - as well as a biscuit - when you make a blood donation. You can find out where to donate here , but really shouldn't do it more than once every 12 weeks for men, or 16 weeks for women. There are also restrictions on age, weight and health grounds. You can check if you're eligible here
