Costa Coffee is giving 16,000 workers a pay rise as it hikes wages by up to 7.3%

Costa Coffee is increasing hourly wages for 16,000 workers by up to 7.3% from this April.

Base pay rates for Costa baristas will increase from £10 an hour to at least £10.70.

More experienced Barista Maestros will see hourly pay rise from £10.53 an hour to at least £11.23, depending on location and role.

The new pay thresholds will benefit employees working across 1,520 company-owned stores, and it means hourly wages will increase by between 6.1% and 7.3%, excluding bonuses

It is the third time Costa Coffee has increased pay rates in the last 12 months.

Nick Orrin, Interim UK&I Managing Director, said: “Our expert Baristas are at the heart of our business and the communities we serve, and we are proud to be rewarding their amazing work.

“This increase reflects everything they continue to do for our customers to make their day that little bit better.”

He continued: “We continue to live in uncertain times, but we are passionate about putting our teams and communities first.

“By always investing in our stores and our teams, we can give everyone a little boost each time they step inside their local Costa Coffee.”

Costa isn't the only company to announce multiple pay rises for its staff.

Pret A Manger last week also confirmed it will give workers their third pay rise in 12 months.

The sandwich and coffee chain is to hike pay for team members from £10.30 to £10.60, or from £11.55 to £11.90, depending on location.

Barista pay will increase from between £10.85 to £11.20, or £12.50 to £12.85, again depending on location and experience.

The pay rises will come into effect from April with 7,870 UK shop staff set to benefit.

Marks and Spencer has also announced it will give more than 40,000 store workers a pay rise from April.

Supermarket customer assistant staff will see their hourly pay increase from £10.20 to £10.90.

Employees in London stores will see their hourly wages upped from £11.25 to £12.05.

The hourly wage of a store worker in Tesco is going up from £10.30 to £11.02 from April 2.

Tesco will also increase its “additional skills payment” for shift leaders to £2.26, taking their hourly wage to £13.28.

Asda has also confirmed it will increase staff pay by 10% for 115,000 workers in spring.

The pay rise will see the hourly rate at the supermarket rise from £10.10 an hour to £11 in April, then to £11.11 an hour in July.
