'Cost too much to sack' - What the national media said about Jose Mourinho after Tottenham loss

Tottenham Hotspur once again gave a lead away in the Premier League in what used to be described as an 'un-Jose Mourniho' like fashion.

But the regularity with which it is happening to Spurs these days, whenever they go ahead it seems almost only a matter of time until the opposition get back into the game.

And for the second time in a week Tottenham's opponents came fighting back.

After going 1-0 up through Son Heung-min, Spurs were pinned back in the second half and fell to a 3-1 defeat and with West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool all taking three points, the Lilywhites' Champions League qualification chances are now looking extremely slim.

Tottenham lie in seventh place, just two points above Everton in eighth, and the Toffees have two games in hand, and six points behind fourth-placed West Ham with only seven matches remaining.

If Spurs still have Champions League aspirations and want to end a 13-year wait for a trophy they have eight matches remaining to save their season, and some reports are saying Mourinho has eight matches with which to save his job.

After another lead was thrown away and Spurs were once again outplayed by a rival team, football.london has taken a quick look at how the Monday morning newspapers have reacted to their defeat.

The Sun

"This match was far more important for Spurs - who are now adrift in seventh on a weekend when their top-four rivals West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool all won.

"Spurs lacked ambition and tossed away yet more points from a winning position - which has been the story of their frustrating season.

"In truth, though, there was not enough ambition or quality about Jose Mourinho’s side," Dave Kidd wrote for The Sun.

The Daily Mail

Writing in the Daily Mail Chris Sutton says Jose Mourinho is no longer the manager he once was:

"When Jose Mourinho came to this country in 2004, he was this funny, smart, charismatic Portuguese chap promising to take the Premier League by storm.

"He followed through on that promise, rather brilliantly. But that man is gone.

"The Mourinho who won three titles with remarkable charisma has been replaced by a Mourinho who holds up three fingers to the world and scowls.

"He is a frustrated, confrontational, irritable figure and living on past glories. There was no glory to be had in Sunday's performance, despite Mourinho claiming Tottenham played well against Manchester United.

"They didn’t, and any Spurs supporter watching from home knows that."

The Express

"Daniel Levy has already reportedly decided that he will have to stick by Jose Mourinho next season because it will cost too much to sack him. The Portuguese is under significant pressure at Spurs just over 18 months after replacing Mauricio Pochettino in the hot-seat in November 2019," writes Ryan Taylor in the Express.

"Mourinho had vowed to deliver silverware, something he could still achieve this season but as things stand, Tottenham appear to be going nowhere under his leadership.

"This afternoon, they were beaten convincingly in the end by Manchester United who showed exactly why they are certainties to make the top-four, with Spurs on course to qualify for the Europa League."

The Guardian

"For Spurs, taking the lead is like a character in Treasure Island being passed the Black Spot. Their demise becomes inevitable. The pattern laid out against West Ham, Lask, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Wolves, Fulham, Arsenal, Dinamo Zagreb and Newcastle was followed again," Jonathan Wilson in the Guardian.

"As Spurs sat deeper, United began to play with fluency and imagination. After a couple of decent blocks from Hugo Lloris, the equaliser arrived 12 minutes into the second half, Fred knocking in the rebound after Cavani’s effort had been saved. Cavani, superb throughout, got the second with a diving header from Mason Greenwood’s cross.

"He did then head against his own post as Pogba flicked on a Spurs corner but the game was not to be shifted from its destiny and Greenwood added a late third.

"And so the Mourinho doom-spiral took another turn nearer the conclusion everybody suspects is coming."
