Cost of Living: People can apply for hundreds in tax back for working from home

There are likely thousands of Irish employees who have been working from home over the past three years or so due to Covid and may be owed hundreds in taxes back.

Many Irish workers may not know they are entitled to working-from-home relief as a form of support for the extra costs endured for things like wifi, heating, and so on.

Those of us who have worked remotely in 2020, 2021, and 2022 could be entitled to claim hundreds of euros in tax back.

There is a simple form to fill out online which asks questions related to your job title, location, and housing status.

You should be contacted with an update within 72 hours and you can check if you are due money back here.

This comes after it was announced that thousands of renters across the country are set to receive a €500 cash boost.

Over 400,000 renters will be paid a €500 tax credit this year, as well as another in 2023, in a new measure announced by the Government in Budget 2023 to help people cope with the cost of living crisis.

Senator Garret Ahearn took to TikTok to explain exactly how this works and how you can claim back your cash.

He said in the video: "Are you renting? Did you know you claim back €500?

"This was announced in the Budget last month where all renters across the country can claim €500 tax relief credit and their yearly tax.”

The senator continued that the claim is backdated and every person in the home can avail of the scheme.

He added: "This is also backdated to 2022, which means with the first one you can claim €1,000.

"The really good thing about this is it's for everyone in the same house, so if there are two people renting in one house, both people can claim back €500 every year."

Parents of students still living at home are also eligible, but those in receipt of housing assistance such as HAP are not.

Mr. Ahearn said: "It's also important to remember the parents of students that are going to college can also claim this money back.

"It’s for those not in receipt of other housing supports."
