Cost of Living payments to be issued to 1.1million people today

Over a million households will be receiving the first installment of the Cost of Living Payments today.

Those who receive tax credits will be issued the first £326 installment of the Cost of Living Payment between September 2 and 7, weeks before the energy price cap will rise by 80 per cent.

Those who qualify for the payment are those who were eligible for a Tax Credits payment between April 26, 2022 and May 25, 2022, with the benefit payment or annual award of at least £26. Some might also be eligible if they were later found to be entitled for a payment for this timeframe.

Payments will be made into bank accounts while those for joint claimants - for example where one receives Working Tax Credit, and the other gets Child Tax Credit, the payment will be made into the same announce as the Child Tax.

The payment will contain the reference “CL” followed by your National Insurance number followed by “0001AX”.

The second half of the payment, which will be £324, will be paid in winter - although no specific date has been confirmed yet.

Those one Working Tax Credit are receiving the Cost of Living Payment later than others. Universal Credit claimants started to receive £326 from July 14, as did those on income-related Employment Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support and Pension Credit.

Who is eligible for the cost of living payment?

The £650 payment is only being given to those who claim means-tested benefits.

This includes:

  • Child Tax Credit

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Income Support

  • Pension Credit

  • Universal Credit

  • Working Tax Credit

You must have been entitled, or later found to be entitled to a benefit payment, between April 26, 2022 and May 25, 2022 to get the cash.

What to do if you don't receive the payment

If you think you should have had the £326 payment, but you cannot see it in your bank, building society or credit union account, you can report a missing Cost of Living Payment.

You can report a missing payment to HMRC from 16 September 2022. This is to allow time for your bank, building society or credit union to process the payment. See more information here.
