Liz Truss thanks Joe Biden for support during death of Queen Elizabeth
Liz Truss’ close ally Therese Coffey has said she is not only a “part-time” health secretary, arguing that her role as deputy prime minister will not hinder her other responsibilities.
“I don’t think it will be a case of being part-time...We don’t have fixed working hours,” she told ITV.
The comment comes ahead of her announcement about her “Plan for Patients” in the Commons this afternoon.
Under the new proposals, GPs in England will need to offer patients non-urgent appointments within two weeks.
The government also intends to publish GP “league tables” to allow members of the public to compare practices’ performance.
However, the move has been slammed by leading GPs, who say it will have a “minimum impact” on patient care.
Beccy Baird, senior fellow at the King’s Fund, said demand for appointments “has been rising inexorably and services have been struggling to meet that demand for some time”.
"Setting new expectations and targets will not suddenly increase the capacity in general practice,” she added.
