Cost of living Ireland: New measures could include fuel allowance extension and family payment

New cost of living measures are set to be announced by Government today in the hope of easing the financial burden on families.

This will be the second round of measures after a €113.50 credit payment was announced for electricity bills in March at a cost of over €200 million.

Under these new measures, that total will rise to €400 million.

But what's included in the plan that has been agreed by coalition leaders, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath and Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe?

Here's everything we know about the latest round of cost of living measures.

Electricity credit payment

The €113.50 credit payment announced previously looks set to be at least doubled to €227, under these new measures.

Working family payment

This weekly social welfare payment could be increased by at least €10 but this is yet to be agreed according to the Irish independent.

Fuel Allowance extension

There is a possibility of extending the fuel allowance is possible. The €33 payment is set to finish in April but that could now be moved.

These measures come just days after the Government announced an €8 billion home retrofitting initiative.

Under the scheme, households can apply for grants up to €25,000 that would cover approximately 50% of the overall cost of a deep retrofit.

This would then save bill payers around €80 per month on heating bills.
