Cost of living help pledge from new Nottinghamshire council leader

The new leader of the council covering Worksop and Retford has indicated that more will be done to support residents and businesses through the cost of living crisis. Measures already taken by the Government to support people through the rise in energy bills in October have included a £400 energy bills support scheme.

But Councillor James Naish, who has been confirmed as the new Leader of Bassetlaw District Council, accepted that residents and businesses may need more help. He said: "There is an immediate need to tackle the cost of living crisis which is impacting residents and businesses across the district.

"A series of measures have already been taken, however, given the importance of this item, we will collectively ensure that the council is aligned on its district-wide response. We all know that this isn't an easy time for households and businesses and while the council cannot help via subsidising energy bills, day-to-day food costs or other items directly, we will make sure that we are supporting residents and businesses where we can."

Councillor Naish has taken on the role of leader from Simon Greaves, who led Bassetlaw for 10 years before announcing his departure in July. Mr Greaves said at the time: "As the Labour Party prepares for the district elections in May 2023, I think the time is right for it to identify a new leader and crystallise its ambitions and priorities for the future."

James Naish grew up in the Bassetlaw village of South Wheatley and his career so far has included working for companies including Shell, Thames Water, Barclaycard, Lloyds and TSB. He returned to Bassetlaw in 2015 and says that he is now committed to "bringing everyone together" in the area.

Outlining his priorities as leader, Councillor Naish, who represents the Sturton ward for Labour, said: "When it comes to the future of Bassetlaw, I want to show residents and businesses that we can continue to build a fairer, better, more equal society. I have an optimistic vision for our future where, despite our limited resources, we continue to create jobs and develop skills, where we are leading by example, and helping residents adapt to the impacts of climate change."
