Cost of living crisis warning as energy bills set to equal 'two months’ wages'

Households have been issued a grim warning as energy bills are set to cost more than two months' wages in 2023.

According to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), an average salary in the UK will be worth £2,054 per month next year after tax — so two months' worth of money will be under the £4,200 value that energy bills are expected to reach.

In response, the TUC has urged ministers to act with urgency and respond to the situation. It has put forward a proposal that would see the October energy price cap increase scrapped.

The proposed scheme would also see the national wage increased starting October and public sector workers paid in line with inflation.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady stated: “Up and down the country, millions of families are being pushed to the brink by eye-watering energy bills.

"With prices set to skyrocket even further, it’s time to say enough is enough. Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak need to wake up to the size of this crisis. This requires a pandemic-scale intervention."

She continued: “Ministers must cancel the catastrophic rise to energy bills this autumn, and to make sure energy remains affordable to everyone, they should bring the energy retail companies into public ownership.

“Ministers should also act to boost pay – as well as Universal Credit, pensions and the minimum wage by bringing forward planned increases to October, and they should fund it through a bigger windfall tax on the obscene profits of energy giants.

O’Grady said that UK will continue “lurching from crisis to crisis if action isn’t taken fast.
