The cost of this Tory Government’s economic mismanagement was spelled out by the Bank of England today.
Britain faces a looming recession, rising inflation and tumbling household incomes.
The cost-of-living crisis will leave more pensioners unable to heat their homes, more children going hungry and more people falling into arrears.
They have been failed and failed again by this Government.
In his Spring statement Rishi Sunak showed he has no idea of how tough life is for many by providing the bare minimum of support.
The Chancellor could have raised pensions, reversed the cut to the Universal Credit and halted his punitive tax rises.
His refusal to impose a windfall tax on the oil and gas giants is inexplicable when BP and Shell have reported record profits.
The shrinking economy and decline in living standards were not inevitable.
They are the result of a Government that is as cold-hearted as it is incompetent.
Tip top priority
The Conservatives first promised in 2016 to bring in laws that ensured hospitality staff kept their tips.
That pledged was repeated in the party’s 2019 manifesto.
There are now fears the necessary legislation has been dropped from next week’s Queen’s speech. This would be a betrayal of workers in a profession hammered by Covid.
The failure to act has cost waiting and bar staff an estimated £11,000 in lost tips over the last six years.
If the Tories fail to act it will be further proof they are on the side of greedy bosses and not low-paid workers.
Big unknowns
Famous names of the past like Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix or Martin Luther King are lost on the younger generation.
And if you ask them who Pablo Picasso was, you’ll draw a blank.
