Cost of Covid test for holidaymakers could be cut to less than £50

Mandatory Covid tests holidaymakers have to take when travelling abroad could be made VAT-free, reducing the cost to less than £50 a time, according to reports.

The Government is said to be considering removing the luxury tax from the tests, which currently cost between £60 and £300, reports The Telegraph.

Tests currently performed or overseen by a nurse are already VAT-free, while those taken at home cost 20% more, reports The Mirror.

A source told The Telegraph: “Exempting the tests from VAT is being seriously considered."

Current rules mean all travellers coming back into the UK must take a PCR test on or before the second day of their arrival, if coming back from a country not on the red list.

The tests are done at home where people have to quarantine.

Those returning from red list countries have to quarantine and test in a hotel.

International travel for holidays could be allowed from England as early as May 17.
