Cost of Boris Johnson's Brexit deal revealed as eye-watering £70billion

Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal would deliver a £70bn blow to the UK, says an economic think-tank.

The cost of the Tory Withdrawal deal would mean that the UK economy would be 3.5 per cent smaller than staying in the EU over the next ten years, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) study.

The researchers worked on the basis that the UK will leave the EU with a free trade agreement after a transition lasting up to 2021 while negotiating new deals with other nations.

The report came as Scottish Brexit Secretary Mike Russell told MSPs that Scots would be £1600 each worse off under Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal.

Scottish government analysis estimates that, under his deal, Scottish Gross Domestic Product would be 6.1 per cent lower by 2030 compared to forecasts under continued EU membership.
