Cossham's birth centre to be partially reopened after a year-long closure

A 'cherished' birthing unit, which was closed for one year amid recruitment problems, is set to partially reopen this autumn.

Last October Cossham Birth Centre shut its doors due to increasing inductions of labour at Southmead Hospital and a shortage of midwives.

Health chiefs have now confirmed the midwife-led unit will open on October 21, but under an “on arrival” model.

Under the plans, once women have given birth they will be discharged from the hospital and transferred to the homebirth team.

The unit will  be closed during the night unless a birth is taking place.

If the homebirth team are unavailable then mums in labour will be offered Southmead Hospital's Mendip Birth Centre as an alternative.

North Bristol NHS Trust director of nursing and quality, Helen Blanchard, said: "We’ve always been committed to reopening Cossham Birth Centre and we’re looking forward to offering, where we can, women the option of choosing to have their baby there.

"We’re sorry some women haven’t been able to give birth there these past few months but this has always been about putting all of our services on a safe and sustainable footing for the long term."

Lauren Pinkett who gave birth to her three children at Cossham launched a petition to save the 'cherished' unit last year.

She said: "I am thrilled for all expectant parents who still wish to birth at Cossham and the midwives who will be able to return and work back in the maternity unit.

"It will take some time to be fully established, but this is a great stepping stone and in keeping Kingswood’s heritage."
