In the early 2000s, 16 emerging artists set up base in Sydney’s Surry Hills where they lived, worked and exhibited their art. Named after the five-storey building they lived in, they were known as Imperial Slacks. They garnered a lot of attention, their work was snapped up, and after five years together they split up and moved on to internationally acclaimed careers.
The artists have reconnected to exhibit their work across Campbelltown Arts Centre and Sydney College of the Arts. Shaun Gladwell, Angelica Mesiti, Emma Price, Sean Cordeiro and Claire Healy, Wade Marynowsky, Alex Davies, Techa Noble, Michael Schiavello, Chris Fox, Melody Willis, Lea Donnan, Simon Cooper, Laura Jordan and Monika Tichacek will present a number of older and newly commissioned works, responding to their practice at the time.
