Cosmetic nurse warns against 'dangerous' social media lip-plumping hacks

A cosmetic nurse has spoken out to warn people against potentially dangerous lip-pumping hacks that are being shared on social media.

London-based Nina Prisk recently won ‘Best Cosmetic Injector’ and sees hundreds of patients each week who travel to see her from across the country for injectable enhancement.

People will do anything in the search for a plumper pout, with many turning to the internet to find cheap and easy hacks to do so, as the Daily Star reports.

But some of the tips that are being shared on TikTok could be harmful, and Nina said you should always see a professional.

Nina said: "There has been no end of so-called ‘hacks’ for lip plumping on TikTok. These have included horrific things such as applying chilli oil and cinnamon to the lips to name but a few.

"However, I can’t emphasise enough what a bad idea this is.

"I would warn anyone to avoid trying TikTok lip hacks such as these because although they may cause an initial tingle, and then a burning sensation if you’re using chilli oil, any lip swelling that does occur is caused by the irritation and will be short-lived.

"What’s more, it will do more damage to the lips in the long run, often leaving lips irritated, dry and sore."

She explained that compared to the skin on our body, our lips have a much thinner layer of cells called keratinocytes, making them especially vulnerable to damage and dehydration.

They also lack a layer of cells called the stratum corneum, which is present in skin and contains fatty molecules such as ceramides which help to protect against water loss.

It’s believed that water loss occurs three times faster from the lips than from other areas of the skin.
