Corsock potter holding prize draw to help tackle hunger and poverty

A Corsock potter is holding a prize draw for one of her pieces to raise money to help tackle hunger and poverty.

Hannah McAndrew is aiming to raise thousands of pounds for FareShare as well as highlighting the issue of racism through the online draw for her slipware charger called This is England.

The piece includes three lions, similar to those on the England football team’s badge, which are black.

The rim has been divided into 13 sections to represent the number of other countries players who were part of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad could have represented.

Hannah said: “I made this piece in response to the racial abuse received by the three England players who missed their penalty kicks during the Euro 2020 final.

“Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka did their best under huge pressure, only to be subjected to a barrage of abuse due to the colour of their skin.

“I’m not a football fan, I’m happy to admit it, and I now live in Scotland but I was taken by the conduct of the English team in this Euro 2020 tournament.

“They have taken a very clear and united stand against racism both on and off the field.

“From what I can see, football teams have huge influence with their supporters, so using their privileged position to send out this powerful message of tolerance and inclusion to fans of all ages can only be a good thing.”

The piece is called This is England after a performance by rappers Stormzy and Dave and former footballer Ian Wright during ITV’s coverage of Euro 2020 in the summer.

The online draw went live on Thursday night at the same time as the England players took the knee ahead of their game against Hungary to highlight the issue of racism.

Within 24 hours, £2,000 had been raised for FareShare, of which Manchester Utd’s Marcus Rashford is an ambassador.

The charity network gets surplus food that would otherwise have gone to waste and sends it to thousands of charity and community groups across the UK.
