Corrie viewers predict surprise sinkhole death victim after Gail Platt scene

Coronation Street fans are worried about the looming death on the ITV soap as part of the show's Super Soap Week.

Corrie boss Iain MacLeod recently confirmed the return of the sinkhole, that first appeared in the Platts' garden a year ago - adding that the events of the week would lead to a character death.

On Monday night, viewers noticed the Platts suddenly mentioning the sinkhole again, revealing it was still in their garden.

In fact it had never gone or been fixed, and had been covered up ever since.

Gail was horrified when someone came to look at it during the latest visit to the cobbles, and informed her it wasn't going to be a cheap fix.

But the mere mention of the sinkhole, so close to the big soap week, has left viewers questioning if some foreshadowing was going on.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer feared poor Gail was going to meet a tragic end in her own garden after mentioning it.

Others feared it would be her mother and soap royalty Audrey Roberts, as she continued to lash out at Gail after recent events.

One viewer commented: "Gail mentioning the sinkhole. Please don't kill her off next month."

Another agreed: "The way Audrey is acting she’s so gonna fall into the sinkhole."

A third wrote: "Is it Audrey that’s going to die when the sinkhole worsens? She’s just referenced a couple of dead characters. Well, apart from Emily."

It comes following confirmation that a stunt would rock the cobbles, as well as other storylines that could lead to tragedy.

It's reported a prison van crash will leave lives on the line, while two other cast members were pictured filming gun scenes.

The main event is tipped to be the sinkhole drama on the street, with it yet to be confirmed who is involved and what exactly happens.

Soap boss Iain said: "We don't have Chekhov's gun in our stories but we do have Chekhov's sinkhole. We've tried to look at the last 12 months and the limited way in which all soaps have been forced to tell their stories, and try to subvert that and go 'we're back'.

"It's going to be really huge - there's loads of emotion, there's loads of big spectacle – it's going to be cinematic."

He went on: "But we're back now, our team is the best in the business and we can do it and we're going to do it and it's going to be incredibly impressive.

"It's a statement of intent that we wanted, as a show, to put out there - to make something we couldn't possibly have made in the past 18 months because the pandemic."

He also said the sinkhole's return would leave one character dead, while not going into detail.

Iain confirmed: "When you do a story of a certain scale and at a certain level of spectacle the viewers expect there to be significant aftermath to it and significant outcomes.

"So yes, I can confirm that Chekhov's sinkhole will result in a death."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
