Corrie viewers fear Rita’s cat is going to eat her as she's trapped under Christmas tree

Rita Sullivan has been left for dead after a fall on Coronation Street - and viewers reckon they have spotted a shock twist in the storyline that involves… her cat.

Heartbroken fans of the ITV soap witnessed Rita fall in her home while putting up her tree on Monday’s episode.

As she put the finishing touches to her decorations while standing on a step, she fell backwards as the tree collapsed onto her, leaving the Corrie legend trapped underneath, perhaps left for dead.

If she does meet her maker, it would be a sad moment for the soap - Rita has been on the street as a full-time character since 1972.

The shock fall forms part of the loneliness storyline which sees Rita, played by Barbara Knox, spending Christmas on her own - well, apart from her beloved cat, Arthur.

And according to sleuth fans, Rita’s biggest immediate danger is that her ginger kitty will eat her in an awful storyline twist.

Viewers flocked to Twitter to speak of their worry over the veteran character.

One said: “Arthur the cat is so going to eat Rita. The greedy monkey.”

A second posted: “If Rita’s cat ends up eating her god I’m gonna go SCREAM.”

A third was a little more delicate with their words: “Poor Rita, let's hope somebody finds her soon because the cat might start getting hungry.”

Another said: “Rita better get some help soon otherwise the cat might eat her.”

Fearing the worst, another posted: “I hope the cat doesn’t eat Rita.”

Putting it more plainly, another viewer said: “Rita’s gonna die and her cat is gonna eat her face.”

Coronation Street continues tonight at 8.30pm on ITV.
