Corrie Steve actor's real name, Liam Gallagher feud and wife's clash with co-star

Thankfully for Coronation Street legend Simon Gregson - his life is polar opposite to that of Steve McDonald.

Away from the cameras the actor and his character could not be more different, although Simon has been involved in some drama over the years that would have been worth watching.

The 46-year-old actor first stepped onto the cobbles in 1986 when he was cast as one of the teenage twin sons of the McDonald family at the age of just 15.

Simon got the job because his classmate, Nicholas Cochrane, was chosen to play Andy McDonald and they needed someone else who was the same heigh, build and hair colour.

As the only member of the class in their Stockport school fitting the criteria, Simon got an interview alongside Nicholas and they secured the roles.

However, Simon was forced to change his name to the one we know today after originally being credited with his birth one.

The actor was actually born Simon Alan Gregory, but had to use the stage name once he was old enough to join the British Actors' Equity Association because their was already another person with his birth name.

While playing hapless Steve, Simon has been part of some major storylines, including affairs, still birth, the death of his son and the discovery of his long lost daughter.

But Steve is best known for his staggering amount of weddings, having been married a whopping seven times to five different women.

In real life, the actor has only walked down the aisle once when he married wife Emma Gleave in 2010.

He previously confessed that he's had so many big days over his three decades in the show that he feared his own would "feel like work".

"The one thing I was concerned about was once you have filmed a wedding so many times and said those vows so many times I was worried that my own wedding might not feel real and might feel like I was working," explained the actor last year.

"In fact when we were looking for venues we found a nice one and then they told us it was where Roy and Hayley had got married, so that venue was out because that would have felt like work!

"But I soon realised that pretend emotions and real emotions are very different and my own wedding day was wonderful."

The self-styled Henry VIII of soap, Steve has tied the knot with Vicky Arden, Karen Phillips, Becky Granger, Michelle Connor and Tracy Barlow.

Admitting his character is a "bit of an idiot", Simon hopes Steve will never marry again and only walk down the aisle to give away daughters Emma and Amy.

"At the time he thinks ‘this is the best thing ever, let’s get married’ – but that never really works out," said the actor.

"He is the Henry VIII of soap – he’s has been railroaded into marriage a couple of times but as daft as he is, his heart is in the right place so he has always done it with the best intentions."

Simon and Emma, who have three sons together, certainly don't have the rocky relationship that Steve and Tracy do.

Loving wife Emma is always on hand to stand up for her husband and it once resulted in a clash with one of his Corrie co-stars.

In August last year, Emma had a spat on Twitter with Sally Ann Matthews, who plays Jenny Bradley on the cobbles, over whether stars should charge for autographs.

Sally argued fans should not be charged for autographs or have to pay for video messages, which was a bit awkward as Simon charges £30 a pop.

She said: "We do them [autographs] for free. You should never pay for an autograph (or a video message come to that) x."

Cleary assuming Sally's comments were aimed at Simon, Emmad made a cutting comment laced with sarcasm about co-stars supporting each other.

In a now deleted tweet, Emma wrote: "Wow!!!! Nothing like sticking together with your work colleagues!"

Simon also had a bizarre feud with Liam Gallagher after they crossed paths outside the Corrie studios decades ago.

In June last year, the Oasis frontman revealed they had clashed while the band were making their TV debut with the song Take Me.

Liam told The Sun: "The guy who is in Coronation Street, Steve McDonald, I was walking down the road with my jacket on and he’s come out and he’s staring at me and I’m staring at him and he’s giving me looks back and I've gone, 'What you f****g looking at?'

"And he’s wound down his window and flipped the bird at me and then I’ve chased him down the road.

"And he wound his window up and drove off and I kept catching him at lights."

But Simon seemed to try to put the situation to bed just days after Liam discussed their row by replying to his tweet.

The rock star posed the question: "What you gonna do with the rest of your life."

And to his followers surprise, Simon replied by insisting that he intended to take Liam out for a pint allowing their fall out.

Liam did not respond but fans were hopeful that the pair could put the past behind them once and for all after the kind gesture.

Steve is going nowhere soon (ITV)

Simon's character is currently at the centre of another dramatic storyline involving a major dilemma.

Steve's daughter Emma has started dating new boy Curtis, who he took an instant disliking to because of a past confrontation.

The former Rovers landlord initially held a grudge against Curtis because of an unfortunate incident where he was knocked off his bike by the "hooligan" during a charity race.

The pair managed to put their differences aside for the sake of Emma, who is clearly very taken by Curtis, but then came fears he was cheating on her.

Furious Steve demanded to know the truth from Curtis, who then left Emma in tears be calling off their relationship with no real explanation.

However, when Steve confronts Curtis again it turns out he is suffering from a devastating health diagnosis.

Trusting him with his secret, Curtis tells Steve the truth but warns him not to tell Emma, leaving the guilty dad to battle with his conscience.

Tracy is baffled when she sees Steve and Curtis together as if nothing has happened and Emma is reeling when she finds out her dad gave her ex a lift.

When Tracy confronts the men over what is going on, Curtis is forced to reveal all and finally tells Emma his secret.

Will Steve welcome Curtis into the family?
