Corrie star William Roache warns I’m a Celebrity fans not to underestimate Andy Whyment

If anyone knows Andy Whyment, it’s his Coronation Street family.

Soap legend William Roache has worked with the I’m a Celebrity star since he first set foot on the cobbles in 2000, and today gave his thoughts about his performance in the jungle so far.

The veteran actor, who plays Ken Barlow, spoke on ITV’s Lorraine, hinting that Andy is not like his dopey on-screen character Kirk Sutherland.

In fact, the cobbles star went so far as to say Andy is “very bright” - and could be one to watch.

Speaking to host Lorraine Kelly, Bill, 87, said: "His character he plays is a very nice, lovable character. Andy is actually a very bright guy.

"He's going to surprise a lot of people, he's a lovely man."

Viewers have enjoyed watching Andy since he first landed in the jungle with fellow latecomer and soap star Cliff Parisi and took part in the Bushtucker trial called Frontier of Fear.

From the off, Andy, 38, had viewers - and hosts Ant and Dec - in stitches as he tried to source five gold stars while rummaging in a shop called General Gore full of offal, worms and fish guts.

But it was when Cliff did his part of the trial that Andy had viewers dying with laughter when he got a fit of giggles.

He said: “I can’t help it, sorry Cliff. It’s just making me laugh, I feel like I’m watching the TV at home.”

Andy is currently the favourite to win the ITV reality show.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 8.30am on ITV.
