Corrie star whose mum was arrested demands clearer guidance on care home visits

Former Coronation Street actor Leandra Ashton is urging the Government to issue clear guidance on care home visits.

Her plea comes amid news that bosses will deny relatives access this Christmas over fears on the new Covid strain and staff shortages.

The 42-year-old formed an advice group for families after her mum Ylenia Angeli was arrested while trying to take her granny out of a home. A clip of the incident went viral.

Although ministers have urged facilities to let relatives in, Leandra said “many are still struggling to get into homes”.

She added: “The new variant and what this will mean on visiting is a huge concern.

“Things have been difficult regardless of the world being supposedly open – some homes have been fantastic but that hasn’t been across the board.”

The actress, who played Saskia Larson in the soap, said her dementia-hit nan Tina Thornborough, 98, was thriving since she moved in with Ylenia in Scotland last year.

She added: “Locking out families is not within their best interests. There needs to be clear guidance from Government.”
