Corrie star reveals she was 'terrified' filming the sinkhole scenes for ITV soap

A Coronation Street star has revealed how she was ‘terrified’ filming the sinkhole scenes for the special episodes of the soap.

Sally Ann Matthews joined Lorraine live from the Rovers Return on Wednesday’s show.

The week of special stunt-filled episodes aired at the end of last month and saw Sally’s character Jenny and Richard Hawley's character Johnny fall through a sinkhole and get stuck in the sewerage systems under the cobbles.

During the interview, the 50-year-old actress explained how she felt about filming those frightening scenes.

Sally Ann said: “I mean those scenes in the sinkhole with Richard, Richard’s final scenes, they were just incredible to do. We had the best time ever, absolutely wet through for six days, but being able to work so closely.

“It was so exciting, I was terrified, to be honest, I had no idea whether I could do any of it but we just had a ball and a really lovely end to Jenny and Johnny’s love story.”

Sherevealed how there is now going to be a bit of ‘argy-bargy’ with the Platt and the Connor family over the sinkhole not being filled in.

“He [David Platt] should have filled it in ages ago,” the star said: “what was he playing at? There’s going to be a little bit of argy-bargy over that, will there even be fighting within the Connors?”

The actress made her first appearance as Jenny Bradley 35 years ago and since then has reappeared in the soap numerous times before she returned permanently seven years ago to reprise her role.

“I’ve been back seven years,” Sally explained: “and already she’s [Jenny] had a very tumultuous time on the cobbles... She’s been through a bit of a trauma."

"When I was here originally we only made two episodes a week... it felt familiar but different, all new, but I knew there was a bond there.

"It's like wearing a comfy pairs of joggers really playing Jenny, I kind of know her inside out and I'm kind of allowed to do whatever I want to do with her which is great fun!"

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV from 9am.
