Corrie star Adam Hussain demands action after sister suffers racist abuse on tram in Manchester

Coronation Street star Adam Hussain has spoken out after his younger sister suffered racist abuse on a tram on her way home from work in Manchester.

Adam says his 19-year-old sister was subjected to abuse from a man who called her a "terrorist" on the tram from Manchester Airport to Cornbrook early on Sunday morning after finishing a night shift.

Adam, 20, who plays Corrie favourite Aadi Alahan, shared his sister's Instagram post about the abuse, in which she said she was: "called a terrorist coming home 6 in the morning from a night shift... didn't know I was a terrorist for being brown".

Adam took to his Twitter to demand action from Metrolink and GMP about the incident - he claims it was witnessed by a tram driver who did nothing to intervene.

Metrolink bosses say they will undertake a full investigation after being alerted to the incident.

Adam's sister has asked not to be named, but was happy for Adam to speak to us about the incident.

Adam told the MEN: "My sister is studying at uni so she’s been doing night shifts to save a bit of money, and she was coming home on the tram around 6 in the morning.

"I find it appalling and outrageous that she has to deal with this - exhausted.

"I hope more is done as people like this think they can say and act in such vile manners and think they can get away with it.

"I feel not many people report this sort of stuff because they feel nothing will be done and can’t be bothered with all the hassle - but that’s what motivates people even more to behave in a horrible way."

In Adam's original Twitter post he wrote: "My little sister was racially abused when she was coming home from a night shift, 6 in the morning yesterday.

"It just goes to show how rampant racism still is."

Damien Chabas, Director of Customer Experience, Growth and Innovation at tram operator KeolisAmey Metrolink, said: “We have been made aware of an alleged racial abuse incident on one of our services over the weekend.

"Behaviour of this nature is unacceptable and will not be tolerated on our network.

"A full investigation is being carried out based on the information we have at this stage.

"As advised by the Metrolink social media team, we would urge the customer to formally report the incident to the police, if they have not already done so.

"We will fully support Greater Manchester Police with their inquiries.”

Adam's friends and followers sent their messages of support and shared his call for action against all forms of racism.

One said: "This is awful! Sorry your sister had to put up with this. Can't believe that people behave like that to others. Shameful."

Another follower said: "I’m sorry that your sister was put through that. We all get some racism at times and it’s time it stopped for good."

A third added: "So sorry to see this Adam. Hope your sister is ok.

"I hate that I am still seeing this sort of thing posted on such a regular basis."
