Corrie's Sue Cleaver has history with on-screen love interest Tony Maudsley

Coronation Street actress Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, recently returned to the soap after a lockdown break.

She has been joined on screen by new love interest George Shuttleworth, played by Benidorm actor Tony Maudsley.

And Sue revealed it is not the first time they have worked together, and also not the first time they have played romantic partners.

"Tony and I have worked together before," Sue, 57, told the Daily Star.

"Years and years ago we played husband and wife, so it's nice to be back in each other's realms."

The duo both starred in BBC police detective show City Central back in 2000 when Sue played a character called Val, and Tony played her husband Arnie.

Sue added it was "nice to be working with each other again" after such a long time.

As Eileen's son Todd Grimshaw is set to return to the cobbles, George helps to stage a hoax funeral for him in order to throw those after him off the scent, but Eileen is horrified.

Sue said Eileen remains unconvinced by George, unsure if she can trust him.

"At the moment she's not sure about him, he's got a bit of a twinkle in his eye and she doesn't trust him and he's a bit flirty."

But, she added, he will definitely grow on Eileen and she said she was looking forward to seeing their relationship develop.

Todd is being hunted by a vengeful gangster ex lover Mick Costello who tracks down his family with terrifying results.

He holds the Grimshaws at gunpoint after breaking into their home, with Todd trapped upstairs.

* Coronation Street airs Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV
