Corrie's Peter Barlow and Carla Connor face devastating life-threatening storyline

Coronation Street 's Peter Barlow and Carla Connor are set to become embroiled in a heartbreaking storyline beginning in the aftermath of the 60th anniversary week.

The couple will face a "life-threatening" situation which could destroy them as they reel from Peter's alcoholism relapse and Carla's recent infidelity.

The storyline is set to run for a year and will put Peter (Chris Gascoyne) and Carla's (Alison King's) love to the test - can they survive it?

Soap boss Iain Macleod told The Sun : "There’s a huge life-changing and life-threatening story which is a long-runner which kicks off in the immediate aftermath of the 60th anniversary week.

"It will run through the most part of next year. It will be the biggest test their love has ever faced.

He added: "It’s really massive and will require one of them to go full method actor. It’s going to be really big and exciting."

MirrorOnline has contacted a representative for Coronation Street for comment.

It was recently revealed that Abi Franklin, played by Sally Carman, and Roy Cropper, played by David Neilson, will become an unlikely duo next year in a "social realism storyline".

Iain told  The Sun : "There’s a really big social realism story that’s going to draw in Roy Cropper and Abi Franklin.

"They’ll find themselves thrown together off the back of their heroics in the community story.

"It’s going to be heart-breaking and serious and hopefully start a lot of important conversations at home."

Ian previously revealed the storyline will also hit Dev's twins Asha and Aadi, and Roy's niece Nina.

It is not yet clear what will happen to the teens and what this has to do with Roy and Abi, but Iain previously explained it would be a "hard-hitting story with massive ramifications".

He said the "social responsibility" storyline would be "incredibly sad and tragic but a really important story".
