Corrie's Maureen Lipman says soap's older stars will return to set in September

Maureen Lipman has revealed that Coronation Street 's older stars are set to return to work in September.

The actress, 74, said she feels "lucky" to get back to normal after bosses brought filming to a halt in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking about her excitement of heading back to the cobbles, Maureen said: "I'm very aware that I'm incredibly lucky to have Coronation Street to look forward to in September when the wrinklies get unrolled.

"There is an element now of people, particularly in my business... you used to be able to waitress when you weren't working but now there's nowhere to waitress. So it is tough."

As ITV execs deliberate over what the new safety measures on set will be, Maureen has revealed some of the changes the actors can expect.

Maureen- who plays Evelyn Plummer in the hit soap - added: "[I've heard] there's no canteen and we're just all confused. When I was in a taxi the other day, I thought the air conditioning is on, I can't breathe.

"I miss my grandchildren so much, I've been Zooming them drama lessons. I did it very professionally with warm ups and tongue twisters. They performed it in the garden and it was just wonderful."

It comes as Corrie stars have been given the green light to return on set later this month, after a plan was drawn up by ITV bosses to ensure that working conditions are safe for cast and crew.

New rules on set include staying two meters apart, to adhere to social distancing requirements, and filming scenes with smaller groups.

This comes after both of the ITV soaps stopped filming on March 23 when the UK went into lockdown.

And with episodes soon to run out from both soaps, ITV are keen to get production up and running in a safe manner,  The Sun  has reported.
