Corrie's Maria lashes out as she points the finger after Liam's hospital dash

Coronation Street fans will watch Maria Windass lash out next week as Liam is rushed into hospital.

The hairdresser has had a quiet time of late after deciding to forgive her murderous husband Gary.

But things will take a dramatic turn next week when her son becomes unwell.

As Liam and Jack play football in the street, Sally collars an indifferent Maria about the parking campaign.

Suddenly, Liam starts gasping, unable to breathe and when the ambulance arrives for the 12-year-old, it is unable to turn onto the street due to double-parked cars.

Maria's very clearly beside herself as her son, played by Charlie Wrenshall, fights for breath but Ronnie comes to the rescue and moves his car to let the ambulance through as a paramedic gives Liam oxygen.

At the hospital, things become a lot clearer as Liam is diagnosed with asthma.

However, Maria’s shocked to learn from the doctor that air pollution caused by traffic fumes is a common cause of the condition.

A fraught Maria takes out her worries for Liam on Gary before deciding that Underworld’s van is responsible for a large share of local air pollution.

Maria, therefore, insists Sarah take it off the road but when she refuses, Sarah refuses and is shocked by Maria’s reaction with first-look pictures showing her taking a crowbar from the garage and smashing up the factory's van.

And Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria, is happy to see her character's spark back.

"It’s great to see feisty Maria back, we haven’t seen her for a while," she said. "It’s really fun and it’s a different side to her that we haven’t seen before, she’s usually fighting over a man but this time she’s fighting for her son and she’s definitely prepared to play the overprotective parent."

The story is part of a new plot for Corrie to highlight the risk of air pollution for children.

It comes after the death of Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, who was in hospital 27 times in three years, before a fatal asthma attack when she was nine in 2013, the Mirror reports.

The soap has worked with Asthma UK on the storyline and is one of many health storylines Corrie has tackled so far this year following Summer Spellman's diabetes diagnosis.
