Corrie’s unlucky-in-love Maria Connor is about to meet a real bit of ruff in a fetish storyline.
Barking scenes next week will show Maria, played by Samia Longchambon, go on a date with a kinky bloke called Rex who likes to romp in a latex dog suit.
Maria meets Rex, played by Maxwell Cavenham, as she tries online dating and they go for a meal in the bistro.
But after he shocks her with photos revealing his fetish, their date really does go to the dogs.
And when Ali Neeson asks if they want a doggy bag for their leftovers, Rex storms out.
Maria has been dogged by failed romances so Samia, 36, lapped up the fun plot.
She said: “Maria starts going on weird and wonderful dates but it doesn’t last further than one date per guy. They’re all random.
“The first brings his mum along while another’s girlfriends have all died under suspicious circumstances.
“Then there’s the guy who likes to dress as a dog.
“Maria thinks he is a goth as he has a collar on, so she says she is into that as well – and he obviously thinks she’s the perfect woman.
“She tells him she used to work at the kennels and was barking around – she meant to music but he thought literally barking!
“It’s all been so great to film and is like a breath of fresh air being able to smile and show Maria’s fun side again.”
Samia has played hairdresser Maria on the ITV hit for 19 years and her 20th anniversary is next April.
Speaking of her character’s dating disasters over the years, she joked she warns potential love interests in the soap that many exes ended up dead.
She said: “Maria is like the black widow of Coronation Street . I always joke to everyone who gets with me, you’ll either get written out, want to leave or just die.
“It seems to happen with everyone. There’s already been Aidan, Charlie, Liam, Luke, Tony.”
Mum-of-two Samia, married to Dancing on Ice pro skater Sylvain Longchambon, 38, added of her milestone: “It’ll be 20 years next April. It’s crazy, I was 17 when I joined.
“It’s been nice staying with Maria, growing up alongside her. It’s special as an actress, you don’t usually get that.”
