Corrie's Jennie McAlpine opens up on getting fat-shamed by trolls who slammed her acting

Coronation Street star Jennie McAlpine has opened up about the difficult side of fame after admitting she was subjected to vile fat-shaming by online trolls.

The actress has played Fiz Stape on the ITV soap for a whopping 17 years, with breaks away from the screen during her maternity leave and while she was in the I'm A Celebrity jungle.

And now the 36-year-old has candidly told OK! magazine of her struggles with trolling, and recalled a time in her life when it was impossible to ignore it.

When asked if she's experienced trolling, she told the mag: "Yes I have. Things like, 'you’re fat' and 'you can’t act'."

And the soap star revealed that when she returned from maternity leave, the welcome she received from viewers was far from what she hoped for.

She said: "When I returned from maternity leave, people wrote, 'Why has she come back?' It’s really not nice.

"It’s really easy to say 'ignore it', but there are times in our lives when we've lost people or we've just become mums and we’re more vulnerable."

She added: "I go on social media but I don’t think I love it and I hope it becomes extinct by the time my children have grown up."

The former I'm A Celebrity star said while she was "thrown in at the deep end", it was like "riding a bike" as she returned to her role as Fiz.

She has her whole life based in Manchester with husband Chris Farr and their two children Albert, and Hilda — named after Jean’s iconic character, but was yearning to return to her role.

She and Chris are keeping themselves busy by running a diner called Annie’s in Manchester.
